Venetian red

Photography

The Italian city of Venice was built on wooden platforms supported by stakes, and the majority of Venetian buildings were constructed with bricks for they were lightweight and permeable. Buildings were then covered with a layer of stucco, and many were colored red or terracotta. Today, these brick walls and vivid red colors still make a huge part of the charm of this floating city, serving as the backdrop of people's daily life on these islands today.

This series explores how this part of the architectural history of Venice plays a role in the city’s urbanscape today. These photographs depict how the vivid red color defines the physical space of the city, as well as how the locals interact with this piece of history of the city today.
